The Federal Defender Services will train law students interested in representing indigent defendants on criminal cases in federal court through the Federal Defender Clerkship Program.
The Federal Defender Clerkship Program will accept students both during the academic school year and during the summer. The Clerkship Program is open to all law students based on academic performance, writing skills and interest in service to indigent criminal defendants. Students can participate in the program as volunteers, or for academic credit through their school’s clinical program. Summer clerks are paid. Students wishing to apply should submit a cover letter, resume and writing sample to Attorney Nancy Joseph, Federal Defender Services of Wisconsin, Inc., 517 East Wisconsin Avenue, Suite 182, Milwaukee, Wisconsin 53202.
The Federal Defender Clerkship Program will accept both part-time and full time law clerks. Part-time clerks will work no less than 15 hours per week.
During the school year, Federal Defender Services works with Marquette University Law School and the University of Wisconsin Law School for placement of students. For the summer program, Federal Defender Services sends notices nationally with a focus on midwestern law schools and schools to which our lawyers already are connected.
