From the Top:
We are excited to launch this periodic newsletter, believing that it will fill a void for federal criminal defense lawyers and their clients. Lawyers tend to focus on the risks a client faces in the courthouse. But many clients, not irrationally, focus much more closely on the day-to-day risks and rigors of custody in the Bureau of Prisons.
BOP policies change and vary in practical application from institution to institution, and much of what happens necessarily occurs behind the wall. Moreover, BOP surely must be among the most rapidly expanding federal agencies in the nation. For all of those reasons, it is difficult for lawyers and clients alike to remain abreast of the rules and procedures that can affect dramatically the programs that may be available to a client, his or her placement, or a client's ability to make use of the resources BOP claims to have and to offer.
This newsletter begins with the modest goal of offering practical help on those points. We intend to publish quarterly, but that could be a loose schedule. Write to us if you think of a topic we should address, or if you (whether client or lawyer) have something to contribute. This periodical may not be pretty, but we hope it is useful.
